Do Termites Really Eat Wood?
Yes, termites really do eat wood. They burrow themselves inside your home or another wooden structure. There is a nest where the termites live, which can range from thousands of termites per nest up to a million depending upon the species. The nest is usually a safe space inside of your walls and they build it close to a nearby food source, often in the form of the wooden beams in your home.
Can Termites Destroy My Home?
Yes. While different species of termites eat wood at different rates, if an infestation is left untreated they can destroy your home. Many termites found in California, such as the subterranean termite, eat wood from the inside out. So, you won’t notice any damage to the outside of the wood, but if you knock on it, you will notice that it is hollow.
Is Fumigation the Only Termite Control Solution for Infestations?
Fumigation is a termite control solution that is preferable for large, severe termite infestations, but it is not the only termite control method available. At Hi-Tech Termite Control, we offer several alternative termite treatments. Many don’t even require you to leave your home during treatment as fumigation does. For smaller infestations, we may use our orange oil termite treatment, microwave termite treatment, or Altriset® termite solutions. These are all highly effective and safe treatment methods for termites.
Can I Use DIY Solutions to Eradicate a Termite Infestation?
While there are DIY solutions out there for termites, we don’t recommend using them. Termites can destroy your home, so you want to take an infestation seriously. In the event that you miss a termite or two, they could start a new nest and continue to reproduce. You don’t want to risk your home just to save a few dollars when it comes to termites.

What Alternative Termite Control Options Are There?
At Hi-Tech Termite Control in Orange County and San Diego, we offer several alternative termite control options including an orange oil treatment, a microwave treatment, and Altriset® termite solution. With these treatments, you will not be required to vacate your home as you would with fumigation.
The XT-2000 Orange Oil Plus termite treatment utilizes oils that are extracted from orange peels and contains the compound d-limonene. This compound is a naturally occurring terpene found in oranges and other citrus fruit. We inject this oil into the areas that are infected with termites and it kills them and the eggs instantly on contact. The treatment continues to work inside your walls for about six months.
Altriset® is a termite solution that is applied around the foundation of your home. The formula was developed by studying a plant in South America that has a compound that causes termites’ mouths to become paralyzed. Altriset® solution works in the same way. When the solution is applied, it begins working right away. You can expect the infestation to be completely under control within three months, and the solution will continue to work for at least nine years.
Xterminator 4.0™ Microwave Termite Treatment
The Xterminator 4.0™ microwave termite treatment is environmentally-friendly and doesn’t involve any dangerous chemicals. It is completely safe for you, your family, and your pets. The termite exterminator will point the Xterminator 4.0™ at the wall where the termite infestation exists. The energy waves travel through the wall and convert into heat as they come into contact with termites and eggs, killing them, and eradicating the infestation.
